Speakers examine how Somalia’s youth are using social media and technology to create opportunities for themselves and build a better future for their country

The UN-backed platform will stream live a first-of-its-kind discussion among Somali change- makers to the world from Mogadishu on Monday.

The platform, dubbed, the Social Good Summit is a global conversation on how technology and new media can be harnessed to address some of the world’s greatest challenges.

“Somali innovators, business owners, information technology experts, community activists, educators, journalists, government officials and development workers will come together to discuss how new technology is increasingly being embraced to rebuild the country,” the UNDP Communications specialist Aimee Brown said in a statement issued in Nairobi on Saturday.

Nairobi to take center stage in The Global Conversation

Nairobi will be a central hub of the Social Good Summit, ensuring that Africa, home to half a billion people under the age of 20 (and 700 million mobile phone users!) is a major part of this global conversation.

Hosted by UNDP, the Social Good Summit in Nairobi will have a great line up of innovators and technology experts who’ll discuss ways to use new media to solve poverty and hunger in Africa. Speakers include:

  • Amira Mikhail, the renowned Egyptian blogger and key figure in the 2011 Egyptian pro-democracy protests.
  • Just A Band, the hugely popular Kenyan band who launched their first hit on Youtube.
